Spill, baby, spill

We can't help the Minerals Management Service (MMS) do their job as a regulatory agency, but we can help integrate their data. In our newly published Drilling Incidents domain, we've used Needle to combine several MMS datasets of offshore oil spills with descriptions of civil penalties against oil companies; cleansed the data; and defined a few sample data views to get you started.
You can explore data inside Needle and uncover patterns that weren't obvious at first. For example, there seems to be an uptick and then decline in civil penalties before and after 2000. Although BP is only number 3 in numbers of spills, a relatively greater proportion of its spills come from exploration than production. Drilling platforms are the site of many more incidents than undersea pipelines, but incidents involving loss of well control are a notable exception.Explore our data and make your own discoveries; or, sign up for Needle to begin seeing your own data in new ways.
